Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can stop flying baseballs and others can weather hurricane-force winds. How?

In regard to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are thoroughly tested for impact resistance.

Tests involve shooting a two-by-four at the window to verify glass keeps intact. We use our hurricane cannon to fire the wood, which travels 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We figured, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could discover a fix that could halt home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was contacted to help supply a historic building by Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s just what we did.

We retrofitted our hurricane cannon to evaluate the home run-resistant windows. We fired baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would mimic the force of a home run.

Our tempered glass weathered the hits best because it’s stronger and safer than generally used annealed glass.

All About Physics

It takes a speed faster than 100 mph and a height exceeding 100 feet to send a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s scenario, we determined the baseballs would be going at about 60 mph upon striking windows.

But we went above and beyond and evaluated impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not concerned about an MLB home run propelling toward your residence, there are a lot of reasons to select tough, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s great for homeowners who want an added level of protection from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are raising the next great baseball player.

Review the benefits and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Toughened glass much like what is used in car windows.
  • Used where cuts from broken glass are a concern.
  • Usually shatters into small, square fragments rather than sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t come apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To learn more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Terre Haute at 812-234-0729. Or, request a free, in-home consultation online.
